Spanish writer Mark Jenkin has extolled the wonderful beauty of Hang Son Doong (Mountain River Cave) in the world natural heritage site Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park in Vietnam’s central Quang Binh province.
In a reportage entitled ‘Vietnam Cave’ published in the National Geographic magazine in January 2011, M. Jenkin wrote “There is a jungle inside Vietnam’s mammoth cavern.”
”The passage to Hang Son Doong is perhaps 300 feet wide, the ceiling nearly 800 feet tall: room enough for an entire New York City block of 40-storey buildings”, he wrote, adding that “And the end is out of sight.”
M. Jenkin cited his teammate Jonathan Sims, who was a member of the first expedition to enter the cave, as saying that his team could explore two and a half miles of Hang Son Doong before a 200-foot wall of muddy calcite stopped them. They named it the ‘Great Wall of Vietnam’.
Measuring 200m high and 150m wide, the cave is believed to be almost twice the size of the current record holder, Deer Cave in Sarawak Malaysia.
Located in Phong Nha-Ke Bang grotto system, the cave is a limestone region of 2,000 sq.km.

In Hoi an, spring is announcing itself, in all its living pomp and majesty.
Walking through the old town, visitors will be treated to the site of moss covered roofs and houses green with creepers.
Each house owner grows a particular kind of creeper, but the plants manage to make their way to neighbor’s houses for a visit. The result looks something like a tapestry.
These images give an idea of why Hoi an has long been a major stop on many tourists’ agenda.

Surrounded by gentle hills and scenic areas, the highland city of Da Lat is still home to intriguing beauty in spite of the growing population, the rise in modern architecture and the number of tourists, said Nhat Ha.
I was a touch disappointed when my car first drove into Da Lat. The city doesn’t look or feel like the old European styled-mountain retreat I remember discovering 10 years ago. There are more nondescript modern buildings, and the multi-storeys which once dominated the capital city of Lam Dong province have retreated into the distance.
Da Lat is synonymous with fragrant pine-forested hills, misty-wet mornings and French colonial-period villas – but have these sides of Da Lat now been crowded out by modernism?
Oddly, it didn’t even seem that chilly. I remembered wrapping myself up in the cardigan, scarf and hat on the cool mornings and evenings 10 years ago. Had the trend of urbanisation warmed up the city? Or was global warming to blame?
I checked into Ngoc Lan Hotel overlooking the city centre and Xuan Huong lake. I then dumped my bags and strolled down to a familiar spot from my past – the Artist’s Café by Da Lat Market.

Iced coffees – compulsory in most of southern Vietnam – are less common in this mountain town. The temperature may have warmed by everyone at the Artist’s Café is sitting over a hot cup of coffee. The thick scent hung in the air and filled me with nostalgia. I ordered one and sat back remembering how I wandered the streets of Dalat stopping at the small cafes with such wonderful names – Lang Van Café (the Writers Café), Phuong Tim Café (Flamboyant Purple Café) of Pho Xuan Café (Spring Street Café).
Such cafés in Da Lat are simple and unpretentious. Locals and tourists share a long bench while savouring the coffee and the pleasant atmosphere around Xuan Huong Lake. The coffee shops are often crowded but always cosy and peaceful. It’s still the best way to start your day in Da Lat. As I sipped my coffee, I watched the customers come and go from the flower stalls where piles of beautiful roses and daisies slowly vanish.
Sometimes described as the City of Love, Da Lat is a popular spot for honeymooners – here and there you will see newly weds posing for photos. But the city also attracts artists, photographers, writers and poets, who all came to the scenic and serene town in search of inspiration. Indeed many artists have decided to stay and take up permanent residence in the town.
The hill-station is a retreat town, a place to kick back and relax far from the worries of the world and the heat of the coastal plains. The fairytale land was quite literally a breath of fresh air for the French tourists.
After my coffee I decided to rent a motorbike – VND100,000 a day – and drive to Lam Dong Museum. As I drove down Tran Hung Dao street, I noticed a number of villas which had been renovated or restored and now looked in mint condition. The brand new Da Lat Cadasa Resort is a particularly stunning structure, surrounded by vast gardens, pine trees and flowers. The resort features 23 charming French styled villas. Each has a different style, but generally they all bear the architectural hallmarks of villas from Normandy in northern France.
After that, I decided to escape the confines of the city and drive out to explore the surrounding hills and valleys. Exiting the city, I passed the stunning Evason Ana Mandara Villas Da Lat Resort & Spa on Le Lai street, another picturesque resort boasting 17 restored French colonial villas scattered around 35 acres of parkland, with 65 elegantly furnished guestrooms in total.
My rambling journey continued past thatched houses, coffee plantations and flower farms. I decided to pop into a plantation to see where my cup of coffee came from. The farmer was friendly and informative – and not because he thought I was here to buy beans wholesale!
The tree-house contains cavern-style sitting rooms, a concrete giraffe tea room, and towering fish heads with guest rooms where you can stay overnight. Down the helter-skelter hallways and up the winding stair-ways you can find various cosy nooks and crannies set up as small sitting rooms with desks, chairs, and coffee tables. It has to be one of the most off-the-wall places to lodge in Asia.
Like something conjured up by the Brothers Grimm, the garden is a weird grotto of aviaries, concrete toadstools and steel spiders webs. It is apparently Da Lat’s top tourist attraction. I stand in awe as hordes of Vietnamese and foreign tourists scramble around.
Back by Xuan Huong Lake, I finally sit down to lunch at Thanh Thuy Café. The Vietnamese menu had a decent salad with blanched beef and a tasty snake fish hot pot filled with loads of local vegetables.
I sat watching the young couples in swan boats pedal across the lake and the tourists browsing through the flower gardens around the lake. It was a pleasant spot and I realised although Da Lat has grown and lost some of its innocence and aesthetic appeal, it still serves its an original purpose as a mountain retreat far from the heat and the noise of Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.
After I sated my appetite I pondered over what to do with my afternoon. Perhaps, I would sit again with another coffee! Nothing should be rushed in Da Lat, and life seeing to run apace with the slow drip-drip of the bitter black drop.

Lang Co – the beautiful bay of Thua Thien Hue Province has been officially a member of the World’s Most Beautiful Bays Club. Together with Ha Long and Nha Trang bays, Lang Co is the third bay of Vietnam which is honourably admitted to this Club.
Lang Co – the fairyland
Lang Co bay is 42.5km in length and 60km away from Hue and 20km from Da Nang. It is nearly a neglected beach located in the base of Hai Van Mountain Pass with smooth seaside resorts, clear water, a diversified and rich ecosystem, an extensive tropical forest on rolling mountains. Moreover, between the mountains and the beach is Lap An lagoon, which stretches attractively on an extensive area. Lang Co is really one of the famous tourist spots of Thua Thien Hue Province, which was compared with a fairyland by Khai Dinh King.
Besides nature-awarded values, Lang Co bay is also a part of the Central heritage road from Phong Nha Cave and Hue Ancient City to Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Sanctuary. It is located in the East-West Economic Corridor and one of the three greatest tourist areas of Vietnam in the master plan for developing Vietnamese tourism in the period of 2001-2010. Moreover, Lang Co is oriented to be developed in a long-term association with Chan May – Lang Co Economic Zone and Chan May – Lang Co deep sea port, which was approved by the Governmental Prime Minister in order to ensure the sustainable and comprehensive development.
With available potentialities and advantages, in recent years, Thua Thien Hue Province has had plenty of action programs and plans in order to diffuse as well as appeal domestic and foreign investment to Lang Co area. Particularly, in 2008, the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue Province issued the Program No. 45/CTr-UBND dated May 27th, 2008 on developing beach and lagoon tourism until 2012. Accordingly, together with the provincial beautiful lagoons and beaches which are paid special attention to the investment, upgrading, and development, Lang Co bay is considered as a breakthrough place of beach tourism with particular targets such as constructing regional and international convalescence resorts and beach entertainment areas, associating with Hue City to connect this region with regional and worldwide big tourism centers; establishing the tour of Hue – Canh Duong – Cu Du – Lang Co – Son Cha and the seaway tour of Lang Co – Son Cha – Da Nang – Hoi An, etc.
Nowadays, besides high-class resorts which have operated effectively such as Nirvana Spa and Resort, Ancient Resort, Huong Giang Resort, Thanh Tam Resort, Lang Co has been still receiving many new investment projects, for example projects for Hue Laguna Resort, Bai Chuoi Resort, Lap An eco tourism area, Thu Duc – Lang Co complex of offices and hotels, Dream Palace convalescence resort, etc.
Deserved to be one of the world’s most beautiful beaches
Basing on the maximum exploitation of potentialities and advantages of Lang Co economic and politic geography, the leadership of Thua Thien Hue Province always specifies to associate the growth with sustainable development, ensuring the harmony between mission of socio-economic development and ecological environment protection. This is shown clearly according to the view of sustainable development that “we need projects, but not necessarily any kinds of projects. We need to spread out the red carpet to invite investors but not necessarily any kinds of investors” or “Thua Thien Hue Province definitively does not issue license for projects which affect environment of this area”, etc. Therefore, lots of billion-dollar-projects such as Project for thremo-electricity plant, Project for shipbuilding, etc. have been refused to be deployed in this area.
Until now, although there have been a lot of high-class convalescence resorts in Lang Co as well as other tourism projects, Lang Co is still a beautiful bay with stretching white sand, green mountain, and blue sea water. It is said that Lang Co enjoys a wonderful nature-awarded beauty. Thanks to the strict preservation and protection of ecosystem and environmental landscape, within the scope of the 5th international conference of the World’s Most Beautiful Bays Club on May 16th, 2009 in Setubal (Portugal) with the participation of 140 representatives of worldwide countries and representatives of 21 members of the Club, Mr. Je’rôme Bignon – the Club Chairman, officially chairs the Certificate Hand-over Ceremony to announce Lang Co Bay (Thua Thien Hue Province, Vietnam) to be the 28th official member of the Club.
On June 6th, 2008, in Lang Co Town (Phu Loc District), Thua Thien Hue Province organized a solemn ceremony to announce Lang Co as a beautiful bay of the world. At the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thien, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee called all local departments, branches, businesses and people to preserve and protect the title of Lang Co – the world beautiful bay by particular activities aiming at conserving and developing natural values of the bay, promoting traditional and community cultural values, developing sustainably in the combination with the investment in order to ensure comprehensive interests for the whole regional people. Moreover, he committed starting to design a long-term plan with lots of communication education programs and projects in order to promote values of natural scenery; develop and train human resources; and call investment projects in the fields of tourism and environment-friendly hi-tech by both domestic and foreign capitals.
The event that Lang Co bay is admitted to the World’s Most Beautiful Bays Club is not only a great honour to Thua Thien Hue Province in particular and Vietnam in general but also an important event in the Year of Cultural Diplomacy 2009 of Vietnam. This international brand name of Lang Co bay will help Thua Thien Hue Province to attract more and more tourists to visit Hue for sightseeing and convalescence as well as to develop tourism as a key economic industry of the province and the Central region.

Community based tourism is seen as a gateway to economic improvement and tourism opportunity in Vietnam.

An artisan of Sinh Village draws pictures on a wooden frame
A seminar was held to promote community based tourism services in central Thua Thien-Hue Province on December 7.
The event was aimed to review the two-year implementation of this type of tourism under the cooperation among farmers, the Responsible Tourism Group and SNV Netherlands Development Organisation.
To date, four community tourism sites have been set up in the province, attracting thousands of visitors, including tours to the ancient village of Phuoc Tich, the Thanh Toan tiled bridge, the Tam Giang Lagoon and the mountainous district of Nam Dong.
Tourists are given the opportunity to see special products made by local farmers, featuring Thua Thien-Hue’s identities such as a handmade-wooden models of Thanh Toan tiled bridge, folk paintings of Sinh Village and paper-made lotus flowers of Thanh Tien Village.
One such place is Ruong House, which is hundreds of years old (a type of panel home typical to Hue) in Phuoc Tich Village, eat cakes and rice with the house owners and then relax in fruit gardens.
If you wish to explore the traditional beauty of Cho House (houses less than 5 square metres set up by fishermen) on Tam Giang-Cau Hai, the widest lagoon in Southeast Asia, this is the place. Here, you can see tools and traditions of local fishermen and enjoy fresh seafood products.
The model of community tourism will help travel firms to bring more tourists to rural areas in Thua Thien-Hue and increase revenue for farmers as well as diversify tourism products in Thua Thien-Hue, according to Pham Thi Duyen Anh, SNV Tourism Advisor.
The following are photos of community tourism in Thua Thien-Hue and farmer’s unique tourism products.
