It is said that the peach flower is the symbol of Tết in the north, then the yellow apricot flower is its counterpart in the south. But today, the apricot is no longer unique to the south. A rare kind of apricot was discovered on Yen Tu Mountain in Quảng Ninh province.

The yellow apricot trees blossoms on the height of 1,000 metres above sea level. In 2007, some of locals and tourists accidentally discovered this precious species of apricot trees while visiting Yên Tử Mountain. They called them “Yên Tử yellow apricot flowers” to distinguish with the apricot flowers in the south.

According to several scientists, the Yên Tử apricot trees and other species of apricot trees in the South have the same origin: they belong to Ochna integerrima (Lour. Merr.) It is questioned whether the Yen Tu apricot trees or apricot trees in the south appeared earlier.

Up to now, there is no research about the time of appearance of these apricot trees. A theory says that apricot trees at Yên Tử Mountain were transferred from the south of Việt Nam and they grow until today. Other theory says that the apricot trees at Yên Tử Mountain travelled from the mountain of southwest China then they went to the south of Việt Nam and other Indochinese countries.

They also visited the Nam Giao Esplanade relic and satellite relics. Thanh Hoa officials introduced information about the globally outstanding values of the Ho Dynasty Citadel.

At the end of the trip, UNESCO Vietnam chief representative Katherine Muller Marin said that she was very impressed with the Ho Dynasty Citadel, the Nam Giao Esplanade and the king’s well.

“I’m impressed by the way ancient people put together big flagstones in such a short time without any adhesive,” Marin said.

She was also impressed by the special design of the Nam Giao Esplanade and King Ho Quy Ly’s reformed ideas. She said that these elements are very important.

Pham Sanh Chau, chief of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Foreign Cultural Relations – UNESCO Department, said that Thanh Hoa authorities need to carefully prepare documents related to this site to get the best result at the 35th session of the World Heritage Committee in Bahrain this June.

Ho Dynasty Citadel was the capital of the Ho Dynasty, which is also called Tay Do (western capital) to differentiate it from Dong Do (eastern capital – Thang Long). This is a unique stone-made work in Vietnam. Around 20,000 cubic meters of stone were used to build the citadel and 100,000 cubic meters of land were excavated.

Located 22km from south of Bãi Cháy Tourist Wharf, Ba Trái Đào (Three Peaches) is a famous tourist attraction in halong bay with three nice fairy beaches and romantic landscape.

Three fairy peaches

This island consists of three small mountains with the height of 23m. It features three small sand beaches embracing small islands. Seen from afar, these islands resemble three peaches.

The island connects to a legend of about the romantic love between a youngest fairy, who was very pretty with a young and poor fisherman. Because of feeling in love with him, she stole three peaches from Heaven for him, which if he ate, would give him eternal life, allowing them to live together forever.

The King of the Heavens got angry when discovering the robbery and turned the peaches into three stone islands. Chastised, the young fairy had to return the heaven and could never meet the fisherman again.

Despite of its sad love story, thousands of travelers, especially lovers, visit this island each year because of its fairy and quiet natural beauty.

HCM City waterway tourism: there is the ship, but no wharf

Posted by admin on under Vietnam Travel in the South, Vietnam travel News | Be the First to Comment

Ho chi minh City’s residents, travel firms and local authorities all have agreed that it is necessary to develop waterway tourism. However, they still do not know what and how to develop.

New tour opened

About 50 travellers on Dong Duong (Indochina) sailing ship officially opened the short-distance waterway tourism route along Saigon River, departing from Bach Dang station to the Ham Long craftsmen’s village in Thanh My Loi in district 2. Phan Xuan Anh, Chair of Du Ngoan Viet Travel Firm said happily: “Now travel firms have one more new tourism product to introduce to travellers when they come to the city”.

Painter Ho Huu Thu, Chair of the Ham Long Craftsmen’s Joint Stock Company, said that the craftsmen’s village, located humbly on the Saigon riverbank and not well known, has welcomed many tourists just seven months after the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism decided to develop waterway tourism. For the last 10 years, the who painters have gathered in this quiet and charming landscape, set up a village to invite people to come here to visit original models in the village exhibit the painting style of southern painters. Now they feel satisfied that their vision is being realised.

The only thing Thu is worried about is that only 1/5 of the works in the village have been fulfilled and the village still is not as perfect as hoped.

Being one of the first visitors to the craftsmen’s village, Ly Ngoc Bach, General Director of Cuong Phat Company said that it is a wonderful idea to present  opportunities for tourists to travel on the river and visit such a beautiful village. “The landscapes here are wonderful and travellers also have the opportunity to admire the paintings of famous painters.

Bach went on to say that the Ham Long craftsmen’s village is relatively large, and if tours can be well organised to allow travellers to admire, behold and relax at the same time, they will not only spend a morning or afternoon here, but the whole day.

Bach also thinks that only one destination for waterway tourism is too little, and that it is necessary to develop more tourism sites along the river.

A ship but no wharf

The thing that may surprise many people is that such a big scale tour still has many problems.  According to An Son Lam, Chair of Dong Duong Sailing Ship Company, Tthe biggest problem is that there is still no wharf for tourists to go ashore. Lam said he is not satisfied when servicemen have to lift and carry travellers in their arms ashore. The current ship is a medium sized ship that can contain only 50 travellers, but there is still no room for it to dock. Larger vessels would have even more difficulties. In general, Lam said, the basic conditions of a tourism wharf are still not good. Lam fears that the lack of the basic conditions will discourage tourists and hinder the development of waterway tourism.

Phan Xuan Anh, who spent time inviting people to take the tour, said he was so happy when the tour caught the attention of Du Ngoan Viet, APEX, Ben Thanh Tourism and Ngoc Phong Enterprise. Anh said that though it takes people only 15 minutes to driver cars from the centre of the city to the Ham Long village, tourists would prefer travelling on river because they have the opportunity to enjoy beautiful landscapes on the riverbank.

Anh said that if a wharf can be built, the waterway tour will be able to attract more tourists and enterprises will also be ready to build more ships.

Anh has also cited that another inconveniences is that foreigners cannot pay by credit cards when they want to purchase paintings in the village. He has also suggested that there are many things that the craftsmen in the village can do to attract more tourists. For example, painters can open calligraphy classes to, or invite tourists to have lunches with painters’ families. In summer, travel firms can bring boys and girls to the village to stay and learn to paint.

Hanoi hotel market: two market segments taking shape

Posted by admin on under Vietnam travel News, vietnam hotel | Be the First to Comment

There are two different segments taking shape in the Hanoi hotel market. Businessmen are choosing new hotels in the western area, while normal travellers choose the hotels in the central area.

Savills Vietnam, a real estate service provider, said that the demand for hotel rooms in Hanoi has increased considerably since the fourth quarter of 2010, and the demand is forecast to continue rising in the first quarter of 2011, since the market has entered the high business season.

According to Do Thu Hang, a senior executive of Savills Vietnam, in the fourth quarter of 2010, Savills Vietnam recognised the ranking of four star Silk Path and five star Grand Plaza hotels. Meanwhile, though Crowne Plaza hotel with 400 rooms has already opened, the list of property of Savills in the last quarter did not include the hotel.

Hang said that the fourth quarter business results of hotels in Hanoi in 2010 was better than that of the previous quarter. The average turnover per hotel room increased by 30 percent over the previous quarter and increased by six percent in comparison with the same period of 2009.

The average turnover per hotel room of three star hotels saw the sharpest increase of 30 percent in comparison with the third quarter of 2010. Meanwhile, four star and five star hotels saw turnover increases of 28 and 25 percent, respectively.

According to Richard Leech, Managing Director of CBRE, also a real estate service provider, continuing the recovery trend, the capacity and revenue per available room (RevPAR) in all market segments in the fourth quarter of 2010 saw considerable growth rates.

The statistics released by Savills Vietnam show that there are bout 6400 hotel rooms on the market provided by 43 hotels, eleven 5-star hotels, eight 4-star hotels and twenty-four 3-star hotels. In the fourth quarter of 2010, hotel room capacities and the hotel room rates increased by 11 percent and 9 percent, respectively.

There are 40 hotel projects under implementation in Hanoi. Of these, 18 projects are expected to provide 5500 rooms to the market. Meanwhile, the number of hotel rooms to be provided by the other 22 projects remains unclear. The future projects are mostly located in Tu Liem, Ba Dinh and Hoan Kiem districts. In general, five star hotels are mostly located in Tu Liem district, while three star and four star hotels are located in districts in the inner city.

CBRE thinks that in 2011, the market will have nearly 1200 hotel rooms from five new hotels, including two ones in the central area, Oriental Pearl and Hotel De Opera Hanoi, which may join the market in the first quarter of the year. Besides, there will be three hotels in the west of the city, namely Crowne Plaza West Hanoi, Grand Plaza Hanoi and Keangnam Hanoi Landmark Tower.

2011 will mark an important milestone in the hotel market with more high grade hotels in the newly developed western area joining the market. As such, with the new wave of establishing new hotels in the west, there will be two clear market segments. Business-class travellers will choose the new hotels in the west, while regular travellers will choose the hotels in the central areas.

Mr Richard Leech believes that the move will force operational hotels to upgrade their material facilities and services in order to better serve different classes of clients.

According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism VNAT, in 2010, Vietnam received five foreign tourists and 28 million domestic tourists and had a total earning of 96 trillion dong. Meanwhile, according to CBRE, in 2010, Hanoi received 8.62 million tourists, an increase of 11.5 percent in comparison with 2009. These included 1.23 million foreign tourists, a 20 percent from 2009.
